People of Nawabganj upazila under Dinajpur district observed Chararhat killing day yesterday.

On this day in 1971, Pakistani occupation army with the help of local collaborators killed at least 103 innocent people of two villages in adjacent Chararat area.

Dinajpur unit of Sector Commanders Forum organised the programme at the killing site. Md Nurul Alam, Organising Secretary of Central Sector Commanders Forum, attended as chief guest.

Those who narrowly escaped death on that day described their horrific experiences at the programme. Sarifa Begum is one of them. She said Pakistan soldiers along with Razakars entered Pranskrishnapur and Saraipara villages at midnight on October 9.

When the villagers found that Pakistani troops had entered their villages, they fled with their family members and took shelter at mosques, but Razakars helped the Pakistani soldiers catch 103 people.

The Pakistani soldiers took them to Chararhat area, lined up all the people there and shot them to death, she said.
