Police today detained the chairman and the secretary of a union parishad (UP) for allegedly misappropriating 35 sacks of rice meant for the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme in Shariatpur's Vedorganj upazila.
The detainees were identified as Md Shamsuddoha Ratan, chairman of Arshinagar Union Parishad, and Jahangir Alam, secretary of the same UP, reports our correspondent quoting Tanvir-Al-Nasif, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Vedorganj.
UNO Tanvir said some 23.36 tonnes of VGF rice had been allocated for 584 fishermen in Arshinagar union, where each fisherman was expected to get 40kg of rice.
"Instead of 40kg, 33-34 kg of rice was given to 324 fishermen and a surplus of 35 sacks of rice was misappropriated by UP Chairman Shamsuddoha Ratan and his secretary Jahangir Alam," the UNO added.
