UP chairman, 6 others sent to jail for gambling

Police arrested a Union Parishad (UP) chairman and six others on charge of gambling at Kalihati upazila of the district on Friday night.

The arrestees are Nazrul Islam, chairman of Digholkandi UP in Ghatail upazila, Hitlu Miah, Jahangir Hossain, Idris Ali, Ful Mahmud, Arif Siddique and Abdur Rahim. They hail from different villages under Ghatail and Kalihati upazilas.

A police team arrested them from Hamidpur Bazar under Kalihati upazila around 9:00pm when they were gambling there, said Shahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kalihati Police Station.

The arrestees are professional gamblers and had been gambling at the bazar for long, police and locals said.

Police yesterday produce them before a Tangail court that sent them to jail.
