UP chair held with relief rice in Pabna, ex-BCL leader fined Tk 1.5 lakh in Tangail

A union parishad chairman was arrested in Pabna and a former BCL leader was fined in Tangail for discrepancies surrounding distribution of relief rice during the coronavirus pandemic yesterday. 

In Pabna, law enforcers arrested a union parishad chairman on charges of misappropriation of government relief rice from Mashumdia union in Bera upazila last night. 

Md Korban Ali (60), chairman of Dhalarchar union parishad and president of AL unit in the same area, stored 229 sacks of relief rice in his private warehouse at Bandher Haat area, the correspondent reports quoting Rab officials. 

The rice is not meant for sale, the officials added.

Acting on information, a team of Rab-12 raided the warehouse around 8pm last night and arrested Korban Ali, said Aminul Kabir Tarafdar, commander of the Rab team. 

Korban was handed over to Aminpur Police Station where a case was filed against him. 

In Tangail's Shakhipur upazila, a mobile court fined a former leader of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) Tk 1.5 lakh due to discrepancies in aid distribution. They also revoked his licence to distribute relief rice. 

UNO Asmaul Hosna Liza, also nirbahi (executive) magistrate of the mobile court, fined Arif Sarkar, a former president of BCL (Shakhipur unit), reports our Tangail correspondent.

"We took action against Arif due to irregularities in the quantity of rice and the distribution process," Liza said.
