Bank official among 3 held for Tk 1.18 cr embezzlement

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday arrested three people including a bank official and his wife for embezzling Tk 1.18 crore from Sonali Bank's Tanore branch in the district.

The arrested are Nazir Hossain, 35, an IT official of Sonali Bank Tanore branch, his wife Salma Jahan, 28, and Masud Hasan, 36, of Dori Khorbona area of Rajshahi city who sheltered Nazir Hossain after the embezzlement, Rab officials said at a press conference held at Rab-5 headquarters yesterday noon.

In separate raids, Rab officials held Nazir and Masud from a house in the city and Nazir's wife from Tanore upazila in the morning.

Nazir Hossain started embezzling the bank's money using his own passwords in 2011, said ASP Rezanur Rahman of Rab-5.

He deposited the embezzled money with two bank accounts opened in the names of his wife and his father.

He went into hiding in June this year when the matter was disclosed and the bank manager filed a case with the Anti-Corruption Commission on June 24, said the Rab official.
