Bangabahadur won’t be taken to Safari park today

Star Online Report

The stranded wild elephant recently rescued and named as Bangabahadur, will not be transported to Bangabandhu Safari Park in Gazipur today as was expected.

Tapan Kumar Dey, chief executive of Nature Conservation Society confirmed this to our Jamalpur correspondent today.

"We are giving her lower amount of food so that she doesn't become too energetic as we were planning to escort her with the help of three other elephants brought from Bangabandhu Safari Park today," the correspondent reports quoting Ashim Kumar Mallick, wildlife inspector of the Bangladesh Forest Department.

Due to the heat, lesser amounts of food and the way she has been tied, tired Bangabahadur fell down and is now lying in the field, Mallick said.

"We are also keeping her wet so that she can cope with the heat," he added.

On the other hand, the forest department is confused over the ways she can be transported into a truck and ultimately moved to the Safari park, Mallick said.

"This is our first experience in tranquilising and transporting a wild elephant. To some extent this is a difficult job and we will consult with the Indian team for advice as they have experience in this," Tapan told The Daily Star.
