Bad condition of Bogura-Natore regional highway creates 3km tailback
A three km tailback was created this morning in Ranobagha area on Bogura-Natore regional highway under Nandigram upazila due to the bad condition of the road.
Traffic stalled as a result of several pits and ditches on the road, reports our Bogura correspondent from the spot.
A jute-laden truck had also turned turtle in the area last night said Saiful Islam, in-charge (IC) of the Kundarhat Highway Police outpost.
"The accident took place as a result of the big holes," the IC said.
"We are trying to solve the problem by filling the holes with bricks," he also said.
The pits were created due to the quality of soil under the road, Md Ashrafuzzaman, executive engineer of the Roads and Highways Department (Bogura), said.
"The soil quality in this area is not good, it compresses under the road every year, creating holes on the surface," the engineer said adding that the condition deteriorates during the rainy season.
"However, no repair work has been done on the road in the last one year," the engineer said.
"We will start repairing work on the road soon. I had already appointed a contractor for this work three months ago, but he couldn't start working due to the coronavirus outbreak," claimed the Roads and Highways official.
Md Mithu, a truck driver stuck in the tailback said that he was scheduled to reach Kushtia with his rice-laden truck in the afternoon.
But he remained stuck at the same place from 10:30am, our correspondent reported around 12:30pm.
Another bus driver Shafiqul Alam, who regularly commutes on this road, said that it takes up one to two hours extra time every day.
