Attackers injure two cops in Lalmonirhat

Two police officers sustained serious injuries in an attack allegedly by the family members and relatives of an 'absconding thief' at Chinipara village in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila on Sunday.

The injured are Assistant Sub-inspectors (ASI) Nurul Haque and Babulur Rahman of Sadar Police Station.

Of them, ASI Nurul was admitted to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital while ASI Babulur was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, as his condition deteriorated.

Police, however, arrested Shamim Hossain, 32, a fugitive accused in at least 6 cases in connection with stealing filed with different police stations of the district, his wife Lily Begum, 28, and Shamim's younger brother Aynul Haque, 28, of the village

Meanwhile, Shamim's daughter Sabrina Akhter, 13, and son Nayem Hossain, 11, who allegedly snatched a wireless set from one of the injured victims, went into hiding to avoid arrest.

Police said the two ASI's went to the village around 7:30pm and arrested Shamim from his residence.

Later, Shamim's family members, equipped with iron rods and bamboo sticks, swooped on the two policemen in a bid to snatch the arrestee from their custody, leaving the duo seriously injured.

On information, a patrol team of police went to the spot and caught the three while they were fleeing from the spot, said Sohrawardy Hossain, assistant superintendent of police in Lalmonirhat.
