8 jailed for snatching cop's gun in Nilphamari

A Nilphamari court yesterday sentenced eight people to 17 years imprisonment in a case for assaulting a police officer and snatching his pistol in 2008.

The convicts are Hadi, 38, Gausul, 40, Saiful, 38, Khaleque, 46, Santosh, 40, Matin, 39, Yaarul, 37, Belal, 43.

According to the prosecution, a gang of criminals attacked Sub-inspector Noor-e-Alam of Sadar Police Station near Dhelapir area on Nilphamari-Saidpur road while he was returning home in March, 2008.

They beat him up and took away his pistol and mobile phone.

After investigation, police submitted the charge sheet against 13 people on May 17 the same year.

After examining 29 witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Mahbubul Alam delivered the verdict yesterday afternoon.

The court also acquitted five people as the charges brought against them could not be proved.

Away in Jhalakathi, a court here yesterday awarded three siblings to life imprisonment for killing a businessman in 2009.

The lifers are Alamgir Hossain Hawladar, Kamal Hossain Hawladar and Bhulu Hawladar, sons of Abdul Gani of Makkarampur village in Jhalakathi Sadar upazila.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each. In default, they are to suffer one year more in jail.

According to the prosecution, the trio beat Abdus Salam, a resident of the village, to death as he accused the siblings of stealing lemons from his orchard.

Victim's nephew Shipon filed a murder case with Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station on July 16, 2009.

District and Sessions Judge Shafiqul Karim delivered the verdict in presence of the convicts yesterday noon.
