8 get life term for murder

A court here on Tuesday sentenced eight people to life imprisonment for killing a woman in Kishoreganj upazila of the district in 2002.

The convicts were also fined Tk 100,000 each. In default, they will have to suffer rigorous imprisonment for one more year.

The lifers are Akbar Ali, his three sons -- Golam Mostafa, Abdul Majid, Nur Islam -- Abdul Mannan, Abdul Hannan, Abdus Salam and Yakub Ali. All are residents of Jummapara village in the upazila.

According to the prosecution, Kalathi Begum, 75, wife of Shamser Ali, was killed by the convicts over previous enmity at Modhya Rajib village on October 22, 2002.

Belal Hossain, younger brother of Kalathi Begum, filed a case with Kishoreganj police station the following day, accusing eight people.

District and Sessions Judge Mahmudul Kabir handed down the verdict.
