8 get life for murder
A court here yesterday sentenced eight people to life term imprisonment in the case for killing a man in Trishal upazila in 2008.
The lifers are Babul Mallick, 33, Aziz Mallick, 63, and his son Hira Mallick, 37, and Lalu Mallick, 36, Ziarul Mallick, 29, Musa Mallick, 36, Abdul Hye Mallick, 48, and Musa Mallick, 30, of Dhanikhola Katakhali area in Trishal upazila.
The court also fined them Tk 5,000 each. In default, they are to suffer another three months in jail.
According to the prosecution, victim Nazrul's younger brother Shafiqul Mallick of Dhanikhola Choupagaria area in the upazila was returning home after threshing paddy at a local rice mill on October 1 in 2008.
On the way, Aziz Mallick and his son Hira Mallick asked Shafiqul to lend them Tk 7000.
As Shafiqul declined to lend the money, Aziz and his son Hira beat up Shafiqul, leaving him injured.
Following the incident, Nazrul went to the house of Aziz and protested the attack on his brother.
The following day, when Nazrul Mallick and his another brother Kashem Mallick were on their way to local Kathakhali Omar Ali High School ground to join Eid-ul-fitr congregation, the convicts attacked the duo with sharp weapons, leaving them injured.
Critically injured Nazrul later died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The victim's son Delwar Hossain Mallick filed a murder case with Trishal Police Station on October 3, 2008.
After examining witnesses and evidence, Mohammad Johirul Kabir, judge of Second Additional District and Sessions Judge's Court, found the eight guilty and pronounced the verdict.
