7 get life for killing Feni BCL man

A court here yesterday sentenced seven people to life imprisonment for killing former Chhatra League activist Bimal Chandra Roy in 1997.

The lifers are Abdul Noman, Sabuj, Mosharraf Hossain, Jashim Uddin, Zahir, Khorshed Alam and Abdul Motaleb. Judge Nilufar Sultana of the Additional Sessions Judge's Court also fined the convicts

Tk 2,00,000 each. In default, they are suffer two more years in jail.

In the same case under Section 385, the court sentenced Noman, Sabuj, Jashim, Zahir, Abdul Motaleb, and another accused Abdur Rahim to seven years' imprisonment. The court fined them Tk. 50,000 each, in default they will have to spend six more months behind bars. Rahim will serve seven years' jail with the seven lifers.  

According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up Bimal from Rezu Mia Bridge on Feni-Chagalnaiya road on October 27, 1997, and took him to GM Haat High School field. They hit him with bricks and injured him on different parts of his body with a drill machine. Locals took him to a private hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

   Later, Bimal's brother Parimal Chandra filed a murder case with Fulgazi Police Station, accusing 36 people. After investigation, CID Inspector Santosh Kumar Kundo pressed charges against 18 people on April 3, 1999. Two of the charge-sheeted accused, Nizam Uddin and Rafiqul Islam, died the same year.

The court acquitted eight other accused as charges brought against them could not be proved.
