7 to die, another gets life term
A Joypurhat court yesterday sentenced seven people to death while another got life term for killing a man in the district in 2006, court sources said.
Abdur Rahim, judge of District and Sessions Judge's Court, delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom in presence of the accused and family members of the victim.
The convicted men are Wazed Ali Roraf, 45, Chaitun Mollah, 43, Safadul Islam, 38, Mosir Uddin, 48, Md Anu, 20, Abu Hasan Dilip, 25, and Montu Mia, 30. They hail from Dharki village under Joypurhat Sadar upazila.
Montu Mia is absconding, police said.
Mahbubur Alam Babu, 25, an accused in the case was awarded life imprisonment, while another accused, Md Montaz, died in jail during the trial.
According to the prosecution, the convicted people killed Md Abdul Motin, son of late Mofiz Uddin of Dharki village under Joypurhat Sadar upazila, on October 27, 2006, out of personal enmity while he was going to his workplace on his motorcycle.
A murder case was filed with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station on the same day, accusing nine people. Golam Rabbani, sub-inspector of the police station, filed the charge sheet on March 30, 2007.
The court delivered the verdict after examining the witnesses and evidence, said Nripendranath Mondal, public prosecutor of Joypurhat.
They murdered Motin over a land dispute, he added.
