6 jailed for manufacturing fake cosmetics in Dhaka

Six persons have been sentenced to different terms of jail in connection with manufacturing fake cosmetics at Keraniganj in Dhaka.

The convicts used to manufacture fake talcum powder, baby powder, body lotion, fairness cream and shampoo copying products of established local and foreign brands, said Sarwar Alam, an executive magistrate of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).

A mobile court led by Sarwar Alam handed down the sentence to the six persons while raided factories of fake and substandard cosmetics at Atashur Kalandi in Keraniganj.

The convicts are -- Md Dolan Khan, 25, Md Jahangir Alam, 50, Md Dalim Hossain, 20, Md Riaz Hossain, 18, Md Nabir Hossain and Md Chunnu, 30, Sarwar Alam who led the drive told The Daily Star.

Dolan, Dalim, Riaz and Nabir were jailed for two years and fined Tk 30,000 each and Jahangir was jailed for one year, the official added.  

Meanwhile, Chunnu, owner of a factory jailed for one year for manufacturing substandard oil.

The court also sealed off five factories and seized fake cosmetics worth Tk 8 crore during the drive.
