6 arrested for beating teenage driver Shaheen

Police today claimed to have arrested six person in connection with attempted murder of auto-rickshaw driver Shaheen and snatching his rickshaw.

Of them, Jahangir Alam, 27, Norim Morol, 78, and Azgar Hosen, 26, were arrested from Sarfabad and Bajitpur villages of Keshabpur upazila in Satkhira early today, police said.

The three others -- Naimul Islam Naim, 24, Nunu Mistri, 65, and Baker Ali, 45, -- were arrested on Monday night, Md Sajjadur Rahman, superintendent of police in Satkhira, said at a press briefing this noon.

Meanwhile, the prime suspect, Naimul gave a confessional statement to a court in Satkhira yesterday afternoon, the police official said.

Shaheen still unconscious

Based on the information of his statement, police arrested the rest of the suspects today, he said.

Norim Morol was the mastermind behind the crime, he added.

A group of unidentified criminals beat up the teenage driver of a battery-run auto-rickshaw and snatched his vehicle in Satkhira’s Patkelghata upazila on Friday afternoon.

The victim Shaheen, 14, was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with critical injuries on Saturday after he received treatment in Satkhira and Khulna.

Shaheen went out to earn bread for his family on the fateful day. A group of four to five men hired his auto-rickshaw from Jashore’s Keshobpur upazila and headed towards nearby Satkhira’s Patkelghata upazila, said the victim’s father who was seriously sick and was unable of getting out of his home.

On the way, the criminals asked Shaheen to stop beside a jute filed. They beat him up until he lost consciousness and left him in the jute field. Later, when Shaheen regained sense, he started crying, the father narrated quoting the victim.

Hearing him cry, locals rushed him to a local hospital, he added.

Shaheen’s father Haider have filed a case against some unknown persons in this regard.
