384 Jamaat-Shibir men charged

Police on Wednesday pressed charges against 384 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir in a case for killing police constable Omar Faruk in 2013.

Officer-in-Charge Mahibul Islam of Harinakunda Police Station, also the investigation officer of the case submitted the charge sheet against the Jamaat-Shibir men to the court of Judge Mohammad Nawabur Rahman of District and Sessions Judge's Court.

The court fixed November 27 for the next hearing of the case in presence of the accused.

On March 3, 2013, Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession in Harinakunda upazila of the district protesting the death sentence of war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi.

When the law enforcers tried to resist them in Doel Chattar area, the precisionists locked in a clash with them.

At one stage, they caught four policemen including Omar Faruk and beat them up mercilessly with sticks and lethal weapons. Faruk died on the spot.

Sub-inspector Aminul Islam of Harinakunda Police Station filed a case against 220 Jamaat-Shibir men, including former upazila chairman Motahar Hossain, and 6000 other unidentified people.
