3,447 people get bail on 4th day of virtual court hearings
A total of 3,447 people secured bail from the lower courts concerned across the country today on the fourth day of virtual hearings of petitions.
More than 300 subordinate courts granted them bail after holding virtual hearings of 4,664 bail petitions from the accused of different criminal cases, Supreme Court Spokesman Md Saifur Rahman told The Daily Star.
Today's bail orders brings the number of accused who secured bail from the lower courts through virtual hearings over the last four working days to 6,425, he said.
The regular activities of courts across the country, including the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court, remained closed since March 26 due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. The closures are scheduled to continue till May 16.
President Md Abdul Hamid on May 9 issued an ordinance allowing the courts to run judicial functions through information technology.
On May 10, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain issued some directives for the courts about dealing with urgent cases through information and communication technology during the ongoing closure.
