At least 28, 832 posts for headmasters and assistant teachers remain vacant in different primary schools as of December 2019, the State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossain today said in the parliament.

A total of 7,018 posts for headmasters and 21,814 posts for assistant teachers are still empty, he said in response to a question by Awami League MP Mamunur Rashid.

Appointment letters have been issued for selected candidates to fill 18,147 assistant teacher posts. All of them will join as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, a letter has been sent to the Public Service Commission (PSC) for the appointment of headmasters. But that remains halted due to a pending case in court.

For now, the government is hiring assistant teachers on the basis of seniority to cover the vacancy of headmasters.

The government has taken measures to start primary education up to the eighth grade according to the national education policy.

At least 783 primary schools with physical infrastructure and adequate educational materials have been given permission to start providing classes up to eighth grade, the state minister added.
