The officers-in-charge (OC) of Rampal and Morelganj police stations and a sub-inspector (SI) were closed to Bagerhat Police Lines yesterday for their alleged controversial roles ahead of the union parishad (UP) elections on March 22.

Goutam Kumar Bishwas, additional superintendent of police (ASP) in Bagerhat, said Rashedul Alam, OC, and Mahbub Alam, SI of Morelganj Police Station, and M Rafiqul Islam, OC of Rampal Police Station, were closed, following an order of the Election Commission (EC).

ASP Goutam said they took the decision after the EC asked them to remove the three policemen from their respective offices and appoint new officials there.

District Election Officer (DEO) Ruhul Amin Mallik said the independent and BNP-backed aspirants, contesting in different UPs under Rampal and Morelganj upazilas, complained to the respective police stations of attacks and threats against them.

But the concerned police officials of the two police stations did not pay heed to their complaints, the DEO said.

A letter attached with the order for closing the three policemen reached the district election office on Wednesday night.
