2 killed in post-poll clashes in Habiganj, Joypurhat
At least two people were killed in post-union parishad (UP) election clashes in Habiganj and Joypurhat districts yesterday and on Saturday.
Our Moulvibazar correspondent reported that an elderly woman was killed during a clash between the supporters of a newly elected member and his rival defeated candidate in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district on Saturday night.
The deceased, Mirasi Begum, 96, was a resident of Kharaki village in the upazila. The incident was a sequel to Friday night's clash that left at least 21 people injured.
Of the injured, Faruk Mia, 32, a supporter of elected member Monayem Kha of Jagadishpur Union Parishad, died at Habiganj Sadar Hospital around 12:00noon on Saturday.
After the burial of Faruk around 10:00pm, the supporters of Monayem Kha launched an attack at the house of defeated member candidate Abdul Hye.
As Hye's elder sister Mirasi tried to resist the attackers, they stabbed her. She died on the spot.
Officer-in-Charge (investigation) AKM Azmiruzzaman of Madhabpur Police Station said police went to the spot and fired several rubber-bullets and teargas-shells to disperse the feuding groups.
Away in Joypurhat, the newly-elected chairman of Badsha union under Sadar upazila, who sustained bullet injuries in an attack on June 4, died at a private clinic in the capital yesterday.
The deceased, Abul Kalam Azad, died at Popular Hospital in Dhaka around 6:00am.
On June 4, unidentified criminals attacked Azad near his house at Konchkuri village while he was returning home riding a motorcycle around 10:00pm.
The gang hacked Azad and fired gunshot at him, leaving him seriously injured.
Injured Azad was taken to Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital and then shifted to Bogra Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Popular Hospital, Officer-in-Charge Farid Hossain of Sadar Police Station said.
