2 additional attorney generals resign
Three days after the appointment of AM Amin Uddin as attorney general of the state, two additional attorney generals --Murad Reza and Momtaz Uddin Fakir -- resigned from their posts today.
They sent their resignation letters to the president through the law ministry this morning.
In the resignation letters, they mentioned "personnel challenges" behind stepping down from the posts.
Murad Reza and Momtaz Uddin Fakir have resigned as they were not appointed as attorney general, a deputy attorney general, on condition of anonymity, told The Daily Star.
Contacted, Law Minister Anisul Huq told this newspaper, "I know that two additional attorney generals have resigned. I don't know the reasons for which they have stepped down."
"These posts will not remain vacant. New additional attorney generals will be appointed now," he said.
Replying to a query, the law minister said, "Murad Reza and Momtaz Uddin Fakir had been discharging responsibilities as additional attorney generals for long. They have done well. I thanked them. The newly appointed attorney general is a senior lawyer and he is very competent and experienced. I feel the functions of the attorney general's office will not be hampered due to the resignations of Murad Reza and Momtaz Uddin Fakir."
Advocate Murad Reza, who had been serving as additional attorney general since 2009, however, refused to give details about the reason behind his resignation.
Advocate Momtaz Uddin Fakir, who was appointed additional attorney general in 2010, told this correspondent that he decided to resign from the post much earlier as he has some personal issues.
Replying to a query, Momtaz Uddin Fakir said there is no relation between him stepping down and the appointment of the new attorney general.
President Md Abdul Hamid appointed senior lawyer and Supreme Court Bar Association's President AM Amin Uddin as the 14th attorney general of the country on October 8.
The post of attorney general was vacant after Attorney General Mahbubey Alam passed away on September 27.
At present, there are the attorney general, one additional attorney general, 67 deputy attorney generals and 151 assistant attorney generals for moving cases on behalf of the state before the Supreme Court.
