Star Online Report

Gonoforum has placed a nine-point proposal to the president that includes enactment of a law in line with the constitution to form a credible and tangible Election Commission.

As part of the ongoing talks, a 14-member delegation led by the party’s President Dr Kamal Hossain placed the demand before President Abdul Hamid at his Bangabhaban residence this afternoon.

After the talks, Kamal told reporters that holding a free and fair election is not possible without a fair and neutral Election Commission.

“A transparent umpire is required for fair cricket match. Similarly, a neutral Election Commission is needed for the election,” he said after emerging from the meeting.

The party also proposed a five-member search committee to form the new election commission.

According to the proposal, a judge of the Appellate Division nominated by the chief justice can be the chief of the search committee.

A neutral educationist, woman representative, a representative of the religious minorities and an impartial media man could fill the quorum of the search committee.
