3 killed in Narayanganj septic tank blast

Three people including two children and a pregnant woman were killed and six others were injured when a septic tank exploded in Narayanganj's Bandar upazila this morning.

The deceased were identified as Masnun (8), and Jisan (12), sons of Khorshed Alam and Laboni Aktar (28), reports our local correspondent quoting Abdullah Al Arefin, assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The septic tank under the five-storey building exploded around 6am due to a lack of maintenance, the fire service official said.

The two children were sleeping in a room on the ground floor above the septic tank. The room's walls collapsed on the duo following the explosion and they died on spot, Abdullah added.

In the meantime, the tin-shed house next to the building, where the pregnant woman lived, also collapsed and injured her severely.

Laboni was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared her dead, said Rafikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bandar Police Station.

The injured were admitted to the Bandar Upazila Health Complex for treatment, the OC added.

Police and fire service officials were conducting further inquiries into the explosion, OC Rafikul Islam said.
