2 held for beating 3 youths brutally in Narayanganj

Police today arrested two people in connection with mercilessly beating three youths for ‘stealing goats’ in presence of a member of the local union parishad in Fatullah of Narayanganj.

A police team arrested the duo after conducting a drive at Shahibazar of Fatullah early today, said M Salekuzzaman, sub-inspector of Fatullah Model Police Station.

The arrestees are Robin, 28, son of Abdul Quader of Brahmangaon village of Fatullah and Yunusur Rahman Yunus, 29, son of Shafiqur Rahman of the same area.

They were sent to court with a seven-day remand prayer each, SI M Salekuzzaman said.

Police launched the drive hours after Nazma Begum, mother of Nayeem, one of three victims, filed a case with the police station accusing five known people including Kutubpur union ward member Alauddin Hawlader and four unknown persons early wee hours.  

They continued the drive to arrest the member, also Kutubpur’s ward no 2 unit of Awami League president, his nephew Md Jihad and loyal Swapon, said the police official.

Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station said they arrested Robin and Yunus who were seen in a video clip of the incident that went viral.

However, The Daily Star has obtained a copy of the clip, but decided not to run it since it was too graphic.

On December 31, a youth was tortured in Narayanganj’s Fatullah after some locals accused him of stealing goats from a house in the upazila.

Two other youths, accused of the same, were beaten in a similar fashion at the same place.

The victims are dyeing mill worker Md Nayeem, 20, bus helper Md Ratul, 18, and electrician Amir Hossain, 25 -- all from Brahmangaon Muslim Para area in Fatullah.

Police and local sources said the incident took place at the office of local Awami League leader Alauddin in Fatullah’s Kutubpur area.

According to them, the AL leader, also a member of the local union parishad, was present at the scene and the three youths, now in jail, were beaten at his order.

On December 12, two goats were stolen from the house of one Shafiqul Islam in Shahi Mahallah area, according to local police.

Contacted, Alauddin claimed that the theft was captured by a CCTV camera and he intervened after police asked him to “settle” the matter.
