Rajshahi reports first death of Covid-19 patient

Star Online Report

An 80-year-old man, who tested positive for coronavirus, died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) this morning.

The patient breathed his last at 7:40 am and it was the first death from Covid-19 at the hospital and the district, said RMCH Deputy Director Saiful Ferdous.

After his death, his son claimed that hospital authorities failed to provide proper treatment for his father, reports our Rajshahi staff correspondent.

The patient, hailing from the district's Bagha upazila, was admitted to the hospital on April 17 with urinary problems.

As he developed fever and breathing problems and his X-ray revealed symptoms for coronavirus infection, his samples were sent for tests.

The test came back positive for coronavirus on April 20 and he was shifted to Infectious Disease (ID) Hospital that runs under RMCH.

Talking to reporters, the patient's son said his father had been suffering from serious breathing problems and he needed the support of a ventilator in an Intensive Care Unit.

But that support was not available at the ID Hospital.

The deputy director could not comment on the patient's treatment, while senior officials did not respond to phone calls.
