Two more policemen die from coronavirus

Two police personnel who were infected with Covid-19 have died since yesterday.

The deceased are Abdul Khaleq (26), an assistant sub-inspector of Public Order Management, and Asheq Mahmud, a constable of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

With them, a total of three police personnel have so far died from Covid-19. More than 500 police personnel have so far been infected and over 1,100 have been placed in quarantine across the country.

Asheq breathed his last around 9:30pm last night while was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Razarbagh Police Hospital, said Badrul Hasan, additional deputy commissioner (ADC - admin) of DMP (traffic-north).

He hailed from Jamalpur and was posted to Traffic North (Airport zone) in the capital, the police official said.

Asheq was put under institutional quarantine at Siddheswari School and College in Dhaka while suffering from Covid-19 like symptoms, Badrul said.

His sample was collected and tested at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on April 26 and came back coronavirus positive the following day, the ADC added.

He was taken to the ICU at Razarbagh Police Hospital after he showed severe symptoms yesterday.

Meanwhile, a team from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) collected samples of ASI Abdul Khaleq when he fell sick and showed coronavirus-like symptoms on April 28, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC - media) of DMP.

The test result came back positive yesterday and Abdul was taken to isolation at Arambagh Hotel, the police official added.

Abdul, hailing from Barguna, was taken to the ICU at Razarbagh Police Hospital when his condition deteriorated.

He died around 4:30am today, the DS said.

The bodies of the two policemen were sent to their respective districts after holding namaz-e-janaza at Razarbagh Central Jame Mosque in the capital around noon today.

On Tuesday night, Constable Jasim Uddin (40) died with from coronavirus infection. He was posted at a police outpost under DMP (Wari Zone), Bangladesh Police Headquarters said in a press release issued yesterday.

The DMP expressed their deep shock over their deaths and prayed for the salvation of the departed souls.
