West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today extended the ongoing lockdown in the state till May 31 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While making the announcement, Mamata said there would be a few relaxations.

All big shops will open from May 21 and hawkers' markets will resume operations outside containment zones from May 27, she said.

Hotels can be opened maintaining strict social distancing norms. Inter-district buses will also be allowed, Mamata said, adding that salons and parlours can reopen, but the same tools cannot be used on more than six people without being disinfected.

Extension of the lockdown in West Bengal came a day after the federal Indian government extended lockdowns till May 31.
