Writ petition filed for judicial probe into irregularities
A writ petition was filed with the High Court yesterday seeking directives to form a judicial probe commission with its retired judges to investigate the reported irregularities in three city corporation polls held on April 28.
In the petition, Eunus Ali Akand, a Supreme Court lawyer, also prayed to the HC to issue a rule upon on the Election Commission and the government to explain why their alleged failure in holding the elections in a free and fair manner should not be declared illegal.
He requested the court to make the EC, chief election commissioner and secretaries to the ministries of LGRD, home and law, as well as returning officers of Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chittagong city corporations respondents to the rule.
Citing media reports, Eunus Ali in the petition said irregularities were found in the three city corporation polls.
He said people's right was violated since they reportedly could not cast their votes in the city elections.
Eunus Ali told The Daily Star that the HC may hold hearing of the petition on Sunday. Earlier, different countries and international organisations, including the USA, UK and United Nations, requested the government to investigate the reported irregularities in the elections.
