'Weak' EC overlooking irregularities

Awami League's key political ally Workers Party yesterday ripped into the Election Commission and administration for "making the upcoming Union Parishad election controversial".

Law enforcers and the administration have created an atmosphere to ensure the victory of the ruling party candidates, alleged Workers Party general secretary Fazle Hossain Badsha.

"The weak Election Commission is overlooking irregularities," he told a press conference at the party's central office.   

Badsha doubted whether the election would be free and fair.

"The ruling party men, local administrations and law enforcers are creating barriers to the candidates of other political parties except for the ruling party in election campaigning. In some cases, the ruling party chairman candidates are being declared winners unopposed, depriving voters of the right to vote," he said.

The Workers Party and other partners of the AL-led 14-party alliance are facing obstacles in campaigning, he added.

Workers Party politburo members Nurul Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Manik, Nur Ahmed Bakul, Quamrul Ahsan, and central leader Enamul Haque Emran were present at the conference.
