Utilise potentials of 'blue economy'

President Abdul Hamid yesterday advised Bangladesh Navy to utilise the potentials of the sea-based "blue economy" to accelerate the country's economic development.

Hamid made the suggestion when newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Mohammed Nizamuddin Ahmed paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

As Bangladesh has successfully settled disputes over the maritime boundary with India and Myanmar in recent years, the president stressed the need for using vast areas and huge resources in the Bay of Bengal in a sustainable way and keeping the eco-system intact.

During the meeting, the president advised the navy chief to take necessary steps to stop river pollution, especially in the river Buriganga.

He hoped that the development of Bangladesh Navy would continue under his leadership.

Nizamuddin expressed gratitude to the president as he was made the navy chief.

He said Bangladesh Navy would continue to put efforts for the development of the country by utilising sea resources.

The new navy chief sought the president's cooperation to discharge his duties.
