Two activists held

Police yesterday arrested two activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Chittagong University (CU) over Monday's factional fighting on the campus.

The arrestees are Md Rakib of history and Imran Hossain of English, said Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Ismail. Seeking anonymity, a BCL activist said the two were loyalists of CU BCL President Mohammad Alamgir Tipu.

On Monday, around six BCL activists were injured as two factions of BCL allegedly led by Tipu and the unit General Secretary Fazle Rabby Sujon clashed over a trifling matter.

Following the incident, Syeda Sultana Rahman, sister of injured BCL activist Arafat Hossain, filed a case against eight BCL activists, accusing them of attempted murder.

Another case was filed by Mirza Khabir, another injured BCL man, against 15 activists, on the charge of carrying out an attack with sharp weapons.

Meanwhile, two general students submitted two separate complaints to the proctor over vandalism at Shah Amanat and Shahjalal halls during the BCL clash.

BCL activists vandalised four rooms of general students of each hall, said the complaints, demanding punishment for those responsible and repair of the rooms.

Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury said the rooms would be repaired and the people responsible would face action.

Meanwhile, the CU authorities were preparing to file three separate cases regarding the three incidents of vandalism by BCL activists when the report was filed at 10:00pm, said Registrar Prof Kamrul Huda. BCL activists vandalised the classrooms of the physics department on February 4 and the rooms of the two halls on Monday.
