Suspended DNCC ward-33 councillor Rajib’s bail plea rejected

A virtual court in Dhaka today rejected the bail petition of Tarequzzaman Rajib, a councillor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) now suspended, in connection with a charge of amassing Tk 26,16,3600 illegally.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka passed the order after Rajib's lawyer submitted an email petition seeking bail in the case.

On November 6 last year, Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury, an assistant director of the Anti-Corruption Commission, filed the case with its Dhaka Integrated Office-1, against Rajib.

Rabon October 19 last year arrested Rajib from the capital's Bashundhara Residential Area for his involvement in extortion and land grabbing. They also seized seven bottles of foreign liquor, an illegal pistol, three bullets and Tk 33,000 from his possession during the drive.

Rajib is the councillor of ward-33, which covers parts of Mohammadpur area. He is also a joint general secretary of Jubo League's Dhaka north unit. He has since been expelled from the post.

Later two cases were filed against him with Bhatara Police Station under the Firearms and Narcotics Control Acts.

He was also placed on a 14-day remand in the cases.
