Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Khandker Mahbub Hossain yesterday urged the government to stop "wholesale arrest" of people and ensure the fundamental rights.

The joint forces had reportedly been arresting thousands of antigovernment leaders and workers for several days without following provisions of law, he said while speaking at a press conference organised by the SCBA in its auditorium.

Mahbub, also a BNP leader, said a fearful situation had been created in the country as around 12,000 leaders and activists were arrested without arrest warrants and court orders.

He said these people might become rebel if they were falsely tortured.

The SCBA strongly protested the "wholesale arrest" of people and demanded their immediate release.

SCBA Secretary AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon also spoke on the occasion.
