Sreepur Thana Road waterlogged for last two months
Poor drainage system has left Sreepur Thana Road in Gazipur waterlogged for the last two months.
Locals claimed it takes about half a day for water to recede after rain, and the recent incessant rainfall has left the road perpetually waterlogged.
Although the 183m road is not very long, it is important as it connects Sreepur Police Station and five schools to the main road of the upazila.
The road breaks off into two -- one going to the police station and the other to a rest house.
The branch of the road leading to the rest house is in a more terrible condition as an ineffective drain was dug up a month back to mitigate waterlogging. Instead of easing the situation, the drain worsened it.
Teachers and students of the school have repeatedly informed the authorities concerned of the problem but to no avail. They recently formed a human chain regarding the issue.
Md Deluar Hossain Mia, headmaster of Sreepur Pilot Girls High School and College, said often the students have to brave knee-deep water to go to school.
"They are forced to hire rickshaws as walking to school has become impossible," he said, adding that the students have been demonstrating for the last two months for a solution to the problem.
Akram Hossain, a caretaker of the rest house, said rickshaws cannot reach the rest house due to the drain, which was dug up across the road.
Councillor of the municipality, Abdul Jalil, said necessary steps would be taken so that the problem can be solved before Eid.
Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said people can reach the police station using another route but it is way longer.
