Shawkat Mahmud gets bail in four arson cases
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld the High Court orders that granted bail to BNP chairperson's adviser Shawkat Mahmud in four arson cases.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed "no orders" on four petitions filed by the government seeking stay on the HC orders.
The HC had granted ad-interim bail to Shawkat, former president of the Jatiya Press Club, on November 9 and 10 in the cases filed earlier this year during the BNP-led 20-party alliance's anti-government agitation.
Yesterday, the HC granted permanent bail to Shawkat in two cases over a petrol bomb attack on a bus in Comilla on February 2. However, Shawkat cannot be released from jail as he has been shown arrested in two other cases, his lawyer Morshed Al Mamun said.
