SC stays HC order asking Titas to give Tk 5 lakh to N’ganj mosque blast victims

The Supreme Court today stayed till December 1 a High Court order that asked Titas Gas Ltd to give Tk 5 lakh as primary compensation to families of those who died and suffered burn injuries in the Narayanganj mosque blast.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Md Nuruzzaman passed the stay order following a petition filed by Titas Gas Ltd seeking stay on the HC order.

The apex court judge also sent Titas Gas Ltd's petition to its full bench for hearing on December 1.

Titas Gas Ltd's lawyer AM Amin Uddin told The Daily Star that his client does not Tk 5 lakh to each victim following the SC's stay order.

It hasn't been determined whether Titas Gas Ltd is responsible for the explosion as no probe report has been submitted yet, Amin Uddin said.

Another lawyer of Titas Gas Ltd Mejbahur Rahman told The Daily Star that his client submitted the stay petition to the apex court today saying no probe report is yet to be submitted.

Therefore, it hasn't been determined whether Titas Gas Ltd is actually responsible for the incident and the actual cost for the incident has not been determined, he said.

Following a writ petition filed by SC lawyer and a resident of Narayanganj Mar-um Khondaker, the HC on September 9 directed Titas Gas Ltd to give Tk 5 lakh as initial costs in seven days to each family of the victims, who died and suffered burn injuries in the Narayanganj mosque blast.
