SC rejects Fakhrul's explanation

The Supreme Court yesterday refused to accept the explanation of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his comment about the judiciary as the relevant affidavit did not have his signature.

The apex court said Fakhrul will have to sign the affidavit containing the explanation and submit it by today.

Different newspapers quoted Fakhrul as saying on February 7 at a party meeting in Sylhet that the government was trying to control the judiciary.

While hearing three bail petitions filed by Fakhrul, the SC on February 18 asked Fakhrul to explain his comment on the judiciary by yesterday.

Fakhrul's lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon told The Daily Star that after the court refused to accept his explanation, Fakhrul appeared before the SC registrar general and signed the affidavit later in the day.

Earlier in the day, Fakhrul had submitted his explanation with the affidavit, which was signed by his lawyer on record.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha fixed today for hearing the issue.

Leon quoted Fakhrul as saying in his explanation that he did not make any statement to damage the dignity of the court and the judiciary.
