RU teachers, students demand speedy trial

Some 300 teachers and students joined a procession and rally of Rajshahi University Teachers Association (Ruta) on the campus yesterday marking a year into the murder of Prof AKM Shafiul Islam, protesting slow progress in investigations and demanding that the case be heard at a speedy trial tribunal.

Expressing frustration over the fact that the charge sheet was yet to be submitted, they said they had noticed the speedy trial into the killings of children Rajon and Rakib, so they wanted to see the same in this case. Ruta President Prof Ananda Kumar Saha threatened a tougher movement otherwise. Prof Shafiul was hacked to death near his house in Choddopai area on the outskirts of Rajshahi city.
