Road mishap leads to attack on MPs' motorcade
The motorcade of two ruling party lawmakers came under attack near Faridpur town yesterday following a minor accident on Dhaka-Barisal Highway.
At least 13 pro-Awami League men were injured in the attack in Peyarpur area around 9:45am, and two buses of the motorcade were vandalised by an angry mob.
Twelve took primary treatment while one was admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Kazi Keramat Ali, a lawmaker from Rajbari-1, and Kamrunnahar Chowdhury, also from Rajbari and a lawmaker from women's reserved seats, remained unhurt.
They were heading towards Tungipara in Gopalganj to pay tributes at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Locals vented their anger on the motorcade after a truck hit a pickup in Peyarpur, said Md Kamruzzaman, additional superintendent of police of Faridpur.
Three people were detained in this connection, he said, adding, "Legal steps will be taken against them."
Kazi Keramat Ali termed the incident unfortunate.
Around 20 microbuses and buses accompanied the lawmakers' vehicles, said people on board.
