Owner to stay in jail: HC

The High Court yesterday denied bail to Abu Bakkar Siddique, owner of Pinak-6, the launch which capsized allegedly with over 250 passengers in the river Padma last year, in a case filed for negligence in saving their lives.

Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star that Abu Bakkar could not get released from jail following the HC order, but he could move a fresh petition before the lower court concerned for bail.

Bashir said the HC following a bail petition on March 2 granted six months' interim bail to Abu Bakkar, and also issued a rule upon the government to explain as to why he should not be granted regular bail.

The Appellate Division later on stayed the HC order of bail and asked the counsels for the state and Abu Bakkar to take steps for hearing and disposal of the rule before the HC.

The double-decker passenger carrier vessel with a capacity of 85 passengers capsized on August 4 last year. A total of 48 bodies were recovered and 62 remains missing.
