Nat'l unity must for saving democracy: Dr Kamal

Staff Correspondent

A united nation is necessary to keep democracy in the right track, as the Liberation War has proved, said speakers at a discussion yesterday.

"During the Liberation War as well as during the drafting of the constitution, the nation was united and worked together. That unity is desperately needed for the country," said Dr Kamal Hossain.

The programme was organised at Dhaka University to hand over an award "Banglar Pathshala Bangladesh Constitution Commemoration Honour" to Dr Kamal.

Banglar Pathshala awarded him for his contribution to drafting the constitution.

Kamal said the constitution that Bangladesh adopted on November 4, 1972 is unquestionably the fruit of the country's victory in the Liberation War, won at the cost of countless lives.

Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman said while the constitution was being drafted, Bangabandhu told Kamal to ban communal politics in the constitution.

Pakistan took nine years to draft its constitution, but Bangladesh did this in nine months. The maximum credit goes to Kamal for drafting the constitution as he united all, including different political leaders, said Anisuzzaman.

Dhaka University Prof MM Akash, among others, spoke.
