Mufti Hannan, five others indicted for N'ganj AL office bombing

A Narayanganj court yesterday framed charges against six people, including Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami, Bangladesh (Huji-B) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, in a case filed over a bomb attack on an Awami League office at Chashara in the town on June 16, 2001 that killed 20 people and injured over 50 others.

The court fixed August 2 to start the trial.

Other accused are militant leader Obaidullah Rahman, Narayanganj City Corporation Councillor Shawkat Hashem Shaku, Shahadatullah Jewel, and twin brothers Anisul Morsalin and Muhibul Mottakin.

Mufti Hannan and Shahadatullah Jewel were present in the dock. Obaidullah and Shaku are on bail while the two siblings in an Indian jail.

One case was filed over the killing and another for the explosion in connection with the attack.

Police also cleared 31 people, including district BNP President Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker, of the charges.
