Two rights organisations yesterday served a legal notice on five private television channels and the government, asking them to stop showing scenes of smoking in TV dramas and other programmes by January 31.

Supreme Court lawyer Shahdeen Malik sent the notice on behalf of two NGOs -- Environment Council Bangladesh and Ubinig -- saying that the five TV channels -- ATN Bangla, Rtv, Ntv, Bangla Vision, and Maasranga -- are showing scenes of smoking in violation of the tobacco control act.

Shahdeen Malik told The Daily Star that a writ petition will be filed with the High Court, if the TV channels don't comply with  the law.
