Legal notice on govt seeks scrapping of Rony's firearm licence

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday served a legal notice on the government for cancelling in 24 hours the firearm licence of Bakhtiar Alam Rony who has been made accused of killing two people by firing in the capital on April 14.

Eunus also urged the home secretary and the deputy commissioner of Dhaka to pay compensation to the victims' families in 24 hours. If they do not response within the time, a writ petition will be filed, Eunus told The Daily Star.

Rony's friend Kamal Mahmood on Wednesday testified before a Dhaka court that Rony, also son of Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan, shot five times from his firearm when he along with their friends was going to Dhanmondi by a jeep.

Rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim died 16 hours after the shooting and auto-rickshaw driver died on April 23.
