Land Dispute: 6 get death penalty for killing couple in Tangail

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced six people to death for killing a couple in a bid to grab their ancestral property in Tangail Sadar upazila in 2017.

Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka handed down the verdict in presence of the six accused, said Advocate Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan, a prosecution lawyer.

The convicts are Swapon Kumar Das, a step-brother of victim Anil Kumar Das, and his associates Zahidul Islam, Farhad, Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, Monzurul Islam and Shayan Mia.

According to the case statement, Swapon made a plan to embezzle Anil's land property in connivance with the other five accused.

As per the plan, the six convicts killed Anil Kumar Das, a retired government primary school teacher, and his wife on July 26 in 2017.

They also concealed the two bodies inside a septic tank of the victims' house.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital for autopsy.

On July 28, victims' son Nirmal Kumar Das filed a case with Tangail Sadar Police Station over the double murder.

Later, the case was transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 for quick disposal.

On September 17 in 2018, police pressed charges against the six accused in the case and the court framed charges against all the six accused on August 7 last year.

Besides, 27 prosecution witnesses out of 35 gave their depositions in the case.
