Japanese, Bangladeshi firms team up for hospital in Uttara

A Japanese healthcare group will invest Tk 1,000 crore to build a 600-bed specialised hospital in the capital's Uttara, in partnership with a Bangladeshi group.

Hirotaka Ogawa, president of Japan's Ship Healthcare Holdings Inc.'s, and Dr Moyazzem Hossain, chairman of Bangladesh's Aichi Medical Group, have signed an agreement in this regard at the capital's Sonargaon hotel yesterday.

"The paid-up capital of the Japanese group is Tk 500 crore, and authorised capital is Tk 500 crore. Aichi Medical Group will provide land," said Dr Moazzem Hossain.

The construction of the 10-storey hospital Ship Aichi Medical Services Ltd will begin on eight bighas of land on June 1, and it will be ready in January 2018, he said.

It will have specialised treatments on cardiac, kidney and trauma diseases, Dr Moazzem told The Daily Star on the sideline of the agreement signing ceremony.

Some of the advanced treatment facilities will be kidney transplantation, robotic surgery and non-infected operation theatres, he noted.

Twenty percent of the patients will be provided healthcare services for free, said Ulfat Jahan Moon, managing director of Aichi Group.

"We expect fewer people to go abroad for treatment as our hospital will provide international standard services," she said.

Welcoming the investment from Japan, Health Minister Mohammed Nasim stressed the need for maintaining high quality services at affordable costs.
