HC stays construction on Central Law College land in capital

The High Court yesterday stayed the construction of commercial buildings on the lands of Central Law College in the capital's Bijoynagar area for six months.

The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned of the government and college to explain why construction of any structure on the lands of the college for commercial purposes should not be declared illegal.

The High Court bench of Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Md Khasruzzaman came up with the order and rule after Parveen Sultana, a lawyer and a former student of the college, filed a writ petition challenging legality of the decision to build the structures.

Citing from the petition, her lawyer Ziaur Rahman told The Daily Star that the college's principal and ARO Real Estate in November last year signed an agreement for constructing a building on the lands, violating the provisions of the lease deed issued in 1996 by then government for establishing the college, he added.

Officials concerned of the government, the college and also the real estate company have been made respondents to the rule.
