HC asks Rana to surrender to lower court

The High Court yesterday directed Amanur Rahman Khan Rana, Awami League lawmaker of Tangail-3, and his brother Shahidur Rahman Khan to surrender before a lower court in two weeks in a case for the murder of party leader Faruk Ahmed.

The court also ordered the law enforcers not to harass or arrest them till then.

The bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order on a petition filed by Amanur and Shahidur, mayor of Tangail Municipality, seeking anticipatory bail fearing arrest or harassment.

The bullet-hit body of freedom fighter Faruk, also a district AL leader, was found on January 18, 2013.

Police have found evidence of involvement of Amanur and his three brothers in the murder, according to a Prothom Alo report on September 14 last year.

Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star that the lower court will decide whether it will grant bail to the two brothers after they surrender.

During hearing the bail petition on Sunday, petitioners' counsel Rafique-Ul Huq told the HC that his 

clients are innocent and there is no mention of their names in the first information report (FIR) of the case.

Bashir opposed the bail petition, saying the petition is not acceptable since the names of the petitioners were not mentioned in the FIR and they are not accused in the case.

 Earlier, two people accused in the case gave confessional statements before a court about involvement of Amanur and Shahinur in the murder.
