Give list of unauthorised buildings in capital

The High Court yesterday directed the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) chairman to submit a list of unauthorised structures, including shops built on spaces allotted for car parking, in Dhaka before it in two months.

The court also issued a rule upon the government and Rajuk to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to remove these unauthorised structures to ease traffic congestion in the city.

The HC came up with the order and rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

The organisation filed the petition on December 14, saying these unauthorised structures were a cause of traffic congestion in the city.

During yesterday's hearing, petitioner's council Manzill Murshid told the court that owners of buildings have built shops and businesses at ground floors of buildings which were supposed to be for car parking.

Therefore, cars are now parked on roads causing traffic jams, he added.

Manzill also said Rajuk had prepared a list of such 208 unauthorised structures built in car parking areas during the army-backed caretaker government, but no action has been taken in this regard yet.
