Five Jamaat men on 10-day remand

A Dhaka court yesterday placed five Jamaat-e-Islami men, who were arrested in the capital's Banasree with Tk 1 crore on Saturday, on a 10-day remand each in two cases with anarchy and money laundering charges.

Rampura police produced the five, Giasuddin, chief accounts officer of Jamaat central committee and a rokon (policy-level leader), Aminur Rahman, Osman Gani, Lutfur Rahman and Shahadatur Rahman Sohel, before the court with a 20-day remand prayer. Several passports and organisational books were also recovered from Gias' house-cum-office.

Yesterday at a press conference, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said the detainees could not give any logical explanation about the source of the money.

In a press statement, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami yesterday said law enforcing agency nabbed its men as part of the repression on its activists and to create confusion in people's minds about the political party.
